So I know I’ve been talking about summer like a million times. Okay, maybe not a million, but close enough. I mean, I talked about it in this lemonade recipe, summer fashion essentials post, and in this playlist. So basically a million times.
BUT! Summer is ACTUALLY here. The beginning of summer 2016 was marked four days ago after all. And now that basically all the public schools are out on break, it’s time to hit the beach. Now, I know what you’re thinking…UGH, another beach essentials post?!? No, this is not your typical run-of-the-mill essentials post. This is legit, people! Sunscreen and towels are not your only necessities this season.

Okay, sunscreen is important. Muy importante.Yes, a tan may look good (temporarily) but skin cancer? Not so good. So rub that sunscreen on. And not only on your face but also on your lips. Surprisingly, our the skin on our lips is very delicate so you want to protect it just as well as you do your face. Just make sure you’re using the right sunscreen for your lips, face, and body.
Wait…what? You thought conditioner was only for the shower? Well, you thought wrong. If you’re going into the ocean, I guarantee it’s going to be 10x drier and crustier than it was going in. Don’t get me wrong, we all love a little sun and sea salt in our hair but it’s actually really bad for it! One of my tips is to just bring a super hydrating conditioner and condition the ends before taking a dip so you still get a little beachy texture without stripping your hair of its essential moisture. Honestly, no need for a fancy conditioner, anything from the drugstore will do. Or a little coconut oil – that works too 🙂
As we all may know by now, it’s important to stay moisturized, especially after a day of running around in the sun. Carry a moisturizer for your face to prevent peeling and keep that skin soft and glowing. My go-to for (slightly-burnt) summer days is this Mario Badescu one, it has aloe! Oh, and SPF 15.
I’m not sure if a lot of people know this, but if you’re deciding between Aquaphor and Vaseline, pick Aquaphor. It’s dermatologist-recommended and tested whereas Vaseline is not. Vaseline actually makes you break out!! So Aquaphor for the win. While I use this for absolutely everything, Aquaphor sure comes in handy for beach days to hydrate and soothe those flaky lips, patchy elbows and knees, and even tame those messy brows. Talk about a multi-purpose product!
As important as it is the hydrate your skin from the outside, it’s important to hydrate from the inside. Water is seriously the only way. Bring a bottle that can withstand the heat and be sure to sip on it 24/7. And why not do it with a sick water bottle? I love this one from Swell; buy it and you’ll thank me later.
Beach food is great and all…well…tastes great. For about 3 seconds. After those 3 seconds though? Prepare to bloat till no end so instead of overindulging in those funnel cakes and fries, bring fresh cut fruit or smoothies/juices to keep those cravings at bay…and the bloating. The best part? You can leave your cover-up off while eating. Fresh-cut watermelon, pineapple, bananas, spicy lemonade, and green juices are the bomb for beach days.
